If you or if you know anyone who has or has had cancer, then you owe it to yourself or them to start implementing these nutritious, wonderful, delicious foods that fight cancer into your daily diet. Better yet, begin consuming them now and begin fighting cancer before it happens.
After my husband Michael was diagnosed with rectal cancer at the age of 50, we decided that we needed to change our eating habits. It was definitely a wake up call.
And yes, it was pretty scary.
His mother passed away from brain cancer at the age of 49, and his father passed away at the age of 50 from esophageal cancer.
We discovered that a great many factors can contribute to cancer. I did hours and hours, weeks and months of research. Michael wasn’t going to opt for traditional cancer treatments. He was dead set against it, but that is another post in itself.
So listed below are some of the best cancer fighting foods and immune boosting foods that you should start implementing into your diet. What we did was gradually cut out the bad and brought in the good. And you know what? The more healthy I ate, the more I wanted those delicious healthy foods instead of all of the crap!
Foods That Fight Cancer And Boost Your Immune System
Cruciferous Vegetables: Cruciferous vegetables are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and important antioxidants such as beta carotene and the sulforaphane compound. Cruciferous vegetables contain isothiocyanates; phytochemicals which help break down potential carcinogens. They also contain indole-3-carbidol (I3C), which help prevent estrogen driven cancers.
Cruciferous vegetables that are among the most powerful cancer fighting foods
- brussel sprouts
Other cruciferous vegetables for fighting cancer
- bok choy
- Swiss chard
- Chinese cabbage
- collard greens
- mustard greens
Curcumin (turmeric): Curcumin, which is the major ingredient of the spice turmeric, has been a rising star against cancer in recent years. Many studies have reported curcumin’s cancer fighting and prevention abilities. One study found that curcumin can help prevent lung cancer for those that smoke tobacco.
When taking supplements, make sure you get one that contains black pepper. When consuming turmeric, add pepper. Black pepper boosts the effectiveness of turmeric by 2000%.
Mushrooms: There are a number of mushrooms known as “medicinal mushrooms” which can help the body fight cancer and build the immune system. These mushrooms contain a number of valuable cancer fighting and immune boosting compounds including polysaccharides such as lentinan, beta glucan, lectin and thioproline. These compounds attack cancerous cells, prevent them from multiplying and boost immune activity – including stimulating the body’s natural production of interferon.
Put em on an organic salad, make a mushroom omelet, grill some and put em on a grass fed burger, put em in organic spaghetti, put em on a sandwich – Get creative! I love mushrooms!
Some of the very best cancer fighting and immune boosting mushrooms:
- agaricus blazei murrill (ABM mushroom)
- coriolus versicolor (Asian turkey tail mushroom)
- cordyceps oglossoides
- phellinus linteus
Garlic: Garlic, along with onions, leeks and chives, have immune-enhancing allium compounds that increase the immune cell activity, help break down cancer causing substances and block carcinogens from entering cells. Studies show garlic helps lowers the risk of stomach and colon cancer. Diallyl sulfide, a compound found in garlic oil, has also been shown to disable carcinogens in the liver.
Michael and I are garlic and onion freaks. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that we don’t consume either one of these. We just love us some sour cream and chive potatoes (all organic)
Flax: Flax contains lignans, compounds which block or suppress cancerous changes in cells. Flax is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which protect against colon and other cancers.
Put some on top of an organic salad, in organic cereal, in a smoothie – or just eat a handful of them!
Hot Peppers: Hot peppers such as cayenne (chili peppers) and jalapenos contain capsaicin, a chemical which fights cancer and helps neutralize certain cancer-causing nitrosamines. Hot peppers are particularly valuable for helping prevent stomach cancers.
Michael eats these all the time! He eats habaneros plain – Oh my God! I like jalapenos on my tuna salad or a nitrate-free lunch meat sandwich. I also sprinkle cayenne pepper on a grilled cheese sandwich, or on an omelet.
Dark Green Leafy Vegetables: Spinach, turnip greens and other cancer fighting dark green leafy vegetables are rich in folic acid. Folic acid helps maintain the cell’s genetic code and regulate normal cell division. Eat these organic whenever possible.
Dark Seeded Grapes: Dark red grapes contain powerful bioflavonoid antioxidants that work as cancer preventatives. Grapes are also a rich source of resveratrol and ellagic acid, a compound that slows the growth of tumors by blocking enzymes needed by cancer cells. Eat the entire grape, seeds and all. Make sure you eat organic only. Grapes are loaded with pesticides.
Brown Seaweed: Brown seaweeds such as kombu contain the polysaccharide compound fucoidan. Fucoidan has been found to kill cancer tumors including lymphoma, different kinds of leukemia, stomach cancer and colon cancer. Notably, the people of Okinawa, who consume the highest per capita amount of kombu, have some of the highest life expectancies in Japan as well as the lowest cancer death rate.
Michael and I have never tried brown seaweed. If you have let us know, and how you like it.
